An Affair of the Heart
O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Matthew 12:34-37
“Dear Lord, Help me to always remember what is important – not money it the bank, but God in the heart.”
- Sharon Jaynes
In Proverbs, the very wise King Solomon wrote that as a man thinks in his heart – this is the man that he will be. As Christians we need to have a heart focus on God so that our lives will reflect and portray Him to others.
It is easy to put on a front, and pose for the masses: but it is much harder to be real and genuine. It is also much riskier. When you are sincere, unshielded and completely open and vulnerable with people, it is much easier to be hurt by them: and it is much harder to accept their rejection or ridicule: because they are responding to the real you; not some superficial representation of you. But ultimately the true heart of even the most gifted poser is revealed and someone somewhere sees that person for who they really are: and God does regardless of our aptitude at hiding our true nature.
It is also important to realize that when you are a true reflection of God to those around you there will be those who will not receive you kindly: and even those who will deal with you rather harshly. You are in good company: remember Jesus said He was a revelation of the Father and if you knew Him – you knew the Father: and look at how He was treated.
It is so easy to let the things of the world crowd into our heart and take a place because, often we believe these things will enable us to be more readily accepted or that somehow they will make us more likable to others.
But when it comes to the affairs of our heart: who should be our focus and what should be our ultimate aim? Shouldn’t it be to please God and to allow all that we are be a representation and reflection of our love, worship an affinity for Him and only Him?
Often our hearts can get a bit overcrowded with those things we accumulate and collect along the way: maybe it is time for a little spring cleaning, so to speak, and time to make sure that our heart priorities, spiritually speaking, are in the proper order and maintain the optimum focus so that we can be all God wants us to be.
Prayer:
Father, may my heart be a pure, true and total reflection within my life of who You are and what You mean to me.
