Integrity

“In matters of style, swim the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.”
-       Thomas Jefferson

Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?  He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.  He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.  In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the Lord. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.
Psalms   15:1-4

Integrity is that quality of character, presence and nature that gives credibility to the thing a person might say or do.  Integrity means you say what you mean and mean what you say.

Recently I have read on face book posts this idiom, ‘live in such a way that if someone says something bad about you: no one will believe it.’

To accomplish this endeavor successfully requires one to have integrity.

As Christians we need to have integrity with God too.  Spiritual integrity requires that we be forthright with God: that we be steadfast in our commitments: and that we be resolved and attentive to our endeavors to follow His word and keep His commandments.

In establishing, maintaining and keeping our integrity, especially our spiritual integrity, we need to remember it is not subjugated to the opinions or ideals of others but is rather needful of the approval of God.

Integrity should be a desired attribute: a sought after characteristic and an established goal that we each strive for and attempt to attain: especially before God.

Today’s Prayer

Father, integrity is much easier to talk about that it is to achieve and maintain: help me to do both.

Purify my heart
Let me be as gold
And precious silver
Purify my heart
Cleanse me from within
And make me holy
Refiner’s fire
My hearts one desire
Is to be holy
Set apart for You my Master
Ready to do your will.“

A Higher Honor

“God will not look you over for medals, degrees, or diplomas, but for scars.”
-       Elbert Hubbard

And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.  And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,  And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight. Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem: And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.  But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:  For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake.
Acts   9:10-16

The honor in achievement: the glory in recognition: the satisfaction that comes from the receipt of an accolade or award: is a desired experience by many in our world today.  And this desire is not all bad.  In fact, as Children of God we too should seek and desire the highest honor we can receive in service for our Lord and Savior.

What honor is that you might inquire?

The honor of serving,   And the greater the sacrifice that service requires for us personally in terms of what we have to give up in order to fulfill that act of service – and of courser the attitude of the heart in which we do it – can add to the honor that it bestows upon the one we are serving: which ultimately is our Lord.

Remember He taught that when we do anything unto the least of our brothers or sisters, it is the same as doing it for Him.

There is nothing wrong with trophies and rewards that we receive for things done well and achievements accomplished: but these rewards will pass away in time and be forgotten: but the things we do for the glory and honor of God will never be forgotten and the significance of their achievement and merit will follow us into eternity.

Today’s Prayer

Father, may I desire the highest honor, but may I do more than just desire it: may I actively work towards achieving it.

I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.
I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears me when I call

Is Love A Simple Thing

“Love is but the discovery of ourselves in others, and the delight in the recognition.”
-       Alexander Smith

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;  Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.  Charity never faileth:…
1 Corinthians   13:4-8

Almost everyone who had exposure to church teachings as a child was taught that Jesus loves them.  And as adults who are Christians, we have no doubt that Jesus loves us so very much that He was willing to die in our place.  We understand that God loved us enough to send Jesus to be the lamb sacrifice on our behalf to cover our sins with His own blood, and that this love is perpetuated in His making the gift of salvation available to who ever will believe and receive it.

We even grasp the idea that in order to show our love towards God we must attempt to keep his commandments.

And we also understand that He wants us to love each other.

But often somewhere between our understanding and our implementation of what we know something gets lost in the process.

Robert Heinlein said, “Love is the condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.”  I sometimes wonder as I look around the church world, at large, how much we truly want others happiness as much as we want our own.

I see and hear the way we talk to each other and about each other and wonder where did that Christ-like love that we are suppose to have hide itself.

I witness the expectations and demands that are placed on leaders within the church and the harshness with which they are treated and dealt with if they sometimes do not measure up to a particular expectation.  And I wonder how does this demonstrate the love we are instructed to have?

If love is patient, kind, forgiving and all those attributes listed in today’s verses, how good are we doing at loving God by keeping the directives He has given us to follow in loving one another?

Often I think we fall short: but sadly I often think we fail to recognize our short-comings and we make no effort to make adjustments so that we can improve in our short falls.

We do not doubt that Jesus and God love us.  We emphatically state that we love Him, but do we love Him enough to love each other as He has instructed us too?

Today’s Prayer

Father, I have failed.  I know I do not love the way I need to, but I want to do better.  Change my heart and help me to see beyond my prejudices and interests to see the heart that needs to be loved the way I need to be loved by you.

I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.
I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears me when I call

Be Not of Many Minds

“Some people fall for everything and stand for nothing.”
-       Anonymous

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.  For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.  A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
James  1:6-8

John Ruskin wrote, “He thinks by infection, catching an opinion like a cold.”

Have you ever known a person who was like that?  I have.  I have met that fellow who had no real opinion or belief of his/her own: but rather whatever group or individual that person is affiliated or associated with: that persons beliefs and or opinions are adopted and accepted as theirs until they meet, someone else and then they adopt their opinions and beliefs: in a seeming perpetual quest to fit in or be accepted.

I have known others who are like chameleons: they adapt to the environment surrounding them to reflect whatever attitude, opinion or thought is the proverbial flavor of the moment.  Rather than take a stand or make a commitment to one belief versus another, or to adopt one opinion over another, these individuals are truly all things to all people so they might be accepted by or approved of by whomever they are with at that point in time.

As Christians we can not be this way and be pleasing to God.  Our yes, must be yes, our amen, amen and we have to stand firm, not wavering ready to give an account of what we believe in and what we are all about in Christ.

We have to know in whom we believe and we have to be willing to stand for that belief no matter what challenges come our way.

If we do not believe in something deeply enough and with enough passion to stand for it, be committed to it and be willing to make sacrifices on its behalf: do we really believe in the first place?

Jesus believed in us enough to die on our behalf – do we have the same depth of belief in Him?

Today’s Prayer

Father, help me to remain steadfast, stable and unwavering in my belief of who you are and what you mean to my life and may I be willing to act on those beliefs regardless of who I am with and what they may think of my commitment to you.

I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.
I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go
He knows my name

What Are We Saying

“The right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously.”
-       Hubert Humphrey

If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.  Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Philippians  2:1-5

Often our deeds or actions say so much more than our words ever could.

It is our inalienable right to have the freedom to express our thoughts, our beliefs, our values, as well as our hopes and dreams: but that does not mean our right to express will constitute an indictment on any other party to listen, hear or accept what we are saying by virtue of either word or deed.  We need to endeavor to make sure that whatever it is we want others to hear, whether expressed verbally or behaviorally is worth their effort to hear or see and that it is effective enough in it’s means or presentation to interest, inspire and elicit their desire to consider or embrace whatever it is we are saying.

As Christians this responsibility is ever present with us.  We need to clearly express both in word and in action the love, forgiveness, compassion and life chaining power that Jesus embodies and represents, not only in our life, but also for the lives of others.

We are charged to make disciples of all men: and we do this not by word only but also by the deeds we perform.

The testimony of our lips must be at least equal to, the expressions of our actions when it comes to declaring our faith, hope and life in Christ; if we truly want others to listen, see and hear what we are attempting to communicate.

We can say a lot with what we do and what we say: but in the final assessment, is it worth listening too.  And if it is; is it presented in such a way that it will stir and inspire others to a similar choice for their lives?”

Today’s Prayer

Father may my words be fewer than my deeds and may my deeds be such that they inspire, encourage and motivate others to draw closer to you.

I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.
I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go
He knows my name
He knows my every thought

And He hears me when I call

It Doesn’t Have To Be Your Battle

“The mass of men live lives of quiet exasperation.”
-       Phyllis Mc Ginley

And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.
2 Chronicles  20:15

Troubles, trails, frustrations, anxieties and problems seem to be common to almost all humanity to some degree, form or measure.  We all face them; none can really escape them: but it is what we do with them; because of them or about them, that makes the difference.

Often, these perturbing incidents that inject themselves into our daily lives can impose more influence: and have more impact than often they should.

More frequently than not, it is often the lesser of these annoyances that often illicit the more dramatic reactions from us, especially as Christians.  Somehow we find it easier to believe God can handle the bigger battles and the greater struggles we face, but when it comes to the day to day things we tend to think He either isn’t interested; isn’t aware or just doesn’t want to get involved:  when the truth is He wants to be a part of every detail of our lives, great and small; big or little.

Often it is not the big battles that bring us down, so to speak, and weaken our faith; it is the daily skirmishes and struggles that overtake us and somehow end up becoming bigger than they need to be.

God can not only handle the giants in our lives: He can also handle the bombardments of daily frustrations and struggles that we face: the true challenge is, are we willing to let Him?

We are often fond of singing, “All to Jesus, I surrender. All to Him I freely give.” – Judson W. Van DeVenter (lyrics from ‘I Surrender All’): but do we really mean it?
We don’t have to struggle with the burdens and stresses of our daily lives because we have the option of laying them at His feet and taking up His yoke: but for Him to effectively intervene: we must fully surrender.

Are you weary, feeling burdened: is the weight becoming a bit too heavy: then cast your cares on Him and make your declaration of the day and say, ‘This Battle belongs to the Lord.’

Today’s Prayer

Father, to many times I find myself yielding the big things to you but trying to take on the daily struggles myself:  may I learn to lean not on my own understanding but trust completely in you for the little things just as much as I do for the big things.

I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.
I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears me when I call

The Obstacles of Life

“If you want a place in the sun, you’ve got to expect a few blisters.”
-       Anonymous

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.  But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.  But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
James  1:2-6

Many times as Christians we feel that we should be entitled to live a trouble free, no problems kind of life: but this is not realistic.

In fact, as Christians we are promised persecution, trails, the testing of our faith and yet when these things come along, sometimes we seem to be shocked and maybe even a little perplexed.

These obstacles of life are needful, necessary and unavoidable.  In fact it is the very nature of these obstacles and the purpose they serve that help draw us closer to God and enable us to grow in our faith and deepen our relationship with Him.

Often we want to speak to the mountain or the roadblock or whatever obstacle that is in our pathway of life and have it be gone; when sometimes God wants us to face the roadblock and get around it or He wants us to climb that mountain to experience the joy of reaching it’s peak and in the process He teaches and equips us for those things we are facing which in turn makes our lives fuller and richer in Him.

Andre Crouch wrote these lyrics in the song entitled. ‘Through It All:’  “I thank God for the mountains and I thank Him for the valleys and I thank Him for the storms He’s brought me through.  For if I’d never had a problem, I wouldn’t know that God could solve them, I wouldn’t know what faith in God could do.”

The next time you face an obstacle in your life, or even if you are facing one now; give thanks for it, and pray for faith, courage and strength to get what God has for you because of it.

Today’s Prayer

Father, I don’t necessarily want to ask for obstacles on my path of life, but I know that there will be some as I go along, so help me to be better ready, by faith to embrace the potential and the opportunities those obstacles present so that I can draw closer to you.

I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.
I have a Father
He calls me His own

A Question About God and Life

“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.”
-       S. A. Kierkeqaard

I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John   14:6

The question for the day is this:  Is God pro-life or pro-choice?

Most, if not all of you have already answered that question with little or no thought or need for reflection.

However, I want you to consider this question from a philosophically spiritual perspective.

Let’s begin by breaking the question down.  First is God pro-life?

Since God created mankind in His own image and He breathed into him the breath of life, I would conjecture that God is most definitely pro-life.

The second part of this question asks; Is God pro-choice?

Remember we are not speaking from   a literal, physical point of view but rather a spiritually philosophical context: and thus doing, I would contend that since it is God’s desire that all humanity accept life in Him; vis-a-ve the second birth through His gift of salvation: that He is also pro-choice.

As the giver of life He is by nature an advocate of life: and since it is His desire that none should perish, but all would come to repentance:  it is also His desire that all would choose life in Him.

So my answer to today’s question would be yes.  He is both pro-life and pro-choice from a spiritual vantage point.

What would your answer be?

Today’s Prayer

Father, may I cherish the physical life you have given me to live and may I also embrace and be thankful for the choice you have given to me for an eternal life in you for all eternity.

I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.

The Motivation to Do

“Lord grant that I may always desire more than I can accomplish.”
-       Michelangelo

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Philippians  4:13

Often, I have found myself parroting the spiritual cliché that has become so prevalent in the church world: ‘God will not bring you to, what He will not lead you through.’  Least you think I have taken leave of my spiritual mind, please understand, I believe this statement whole heartedly, however, we must sometimes evaluate whether the task or project before us is a God lead us to, or a we just waned to do thing.

On the converse, I fear there are far more who call themselves Christians, who never open themselves up to the prospect of God leading at all.  These individuals prefer to be spiritually lethargic or in plan words spiritually lazy.

All God’s children are called to be busy, working and laboring; and yet by-in-large the greatest percentage of the work that gets done in any given church is done by a very small percentage of the overall church populace.

Have you, as I have, ever wondered how much more would get done and how much more effective we would be as a body if we were all motivated to do more than we think we can.

If more of us would get more motivated to let God lead us; fewer people might feel that they have to try to do things God might not be leading them too.

So what do you feel motivated to do?

Today’s Prayer

Father, motivate me to follow you: and in so doing I know you will empower me to accomplish what you lead me to.

I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.
I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go

The Absence of Truth

“We pay a person the compliment of acknowledging his superiority whenever we lie to him.”
-       Samuel Butler

Lying lips are an abomination unto the Lord.
Proverbs 12:22

I found the quote from Samuel Butler, above, to be intriguing and thought provoking.  I suppose prior to contemplating this thought I had always considered an individuals lack of honesty to be an insult, hurtful and harmful, and never did give any thought toward anything positive that could be taken from it. And I’m not sure that I agree with his premise, even yet, but still it did make me stop and think.

I have often wondered, that if we would stop and think before we accuse or judge a situation or a condition based on what we think we know versus what might be actually so, if we might not be better served and more affective servants for the Lord.

I’ve heard many say, ‘truth is relative’ or that, ‘the perception of truth lies within the eye of the perceiver.’  But is that really true?  Aren’t there always three sides to just about every story?  There is yours, there is mine and then there is God’s.

Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Sin has many tools, but a lie is a handle which flits them all.”

I often wonder when it comes to conflict and discrepancies of opinion within the body of Christ, if part of the reason we can’t seem to find resolve, is because we aren’t willing to move beyond our emotional feelings our predetermined prejudices and our human limitations: to allow ourselves to see a truth that may transcend any opinion or thought we may have already had.  Jesus is quoted as saying in the Gospel of John, ‘I am the truth…”

If we could be or would be brave enough to allow God to open our spiritual eyes to see His ultimate truth, I wonder how shocked and amazed we would all be?

Today’s Prayer

Father, so many times I believe a thing to be ultimate truth because I perceive it to be so: Help me to move beyond what I see and help me to grasp what you know so that I can not just seem to see but that I will truly know that truth and that that knowledge will set me free from so much of the stress and frustrations that I find myself dealing with.

I have a Maker

No Room for Superiority

“Never look down on someone unless you’re helping them up.”
-       Jesse James

Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God. Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.  The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.  And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.  To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.  While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 10:33-45

God is not influenced or affected by things like gender, race, a person’s social standing, economic status, intellectual prowess or talents and abilities: He is only concerned with the condition of their soul and whether or not they have accepted His gift of salvation through His son, Christ Jesus.

God doesn’t even look at us as being the biggest sinner or the worst looser: He sees as disobedient souls in need of His saving grace.

God doesn’t see pretty or ugly, gifted or challenged, geek, nerd, jock, socialite or anything else: He simply sees a life He loves, an individual He created and a soul His son died to save.

In God’s economy there is not room for superiority complexes or preferential treatment: What a great example He has set for us, wouldn’t it be wonderful If we would all see each other as equally valuable and important within His kingdom?  If we could, I would imagine, we would have far less stress and strife within our churches.

Today’s Prayer

Father, help me, when I look at those around me to see souls in need of help, love and encouragement, who posses, unlimited potential in who and what they can do and be for you:  help me see them – the same way you see me.

I have a Maker

Perception

“It isn’t so astonishing, the number of things that I can remember, as the number of things I can remember that aren’t so.”
-       Mark Twain

For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 1:12-13

I have often heard it said that perception is reality.  While a particular individuals perceptions might affect, influence and in many cases, constitute what becomes their reality: it does not always make what is perceived factual or real.

Often, perceptions can be influenced by prejudices, experiences and even lack of facts or information pertinent to a particular situation.

The truth is that perception does not a reality make: it can only be a fixed reality when it is ensconced in truth.

That is why, as Christians our realities need to be rooted and grounded in Christ Jesus and we need the Holy Spirit to guide our perceptions so that what we perceive to be, actually is.

The cry of our heart and the desire of our sprit should be to have God open our eyes to see His glory, His beauty: His presence and His power in all that transpires around us.

We need to have our perceptions influenced by His wisdom and His word, rather than our emotions and predispositions.

Can you imagine what a beautiful world we would see if we could but perceive the potential in each individual and each situation that God does?

Sadly to many times our perceptions are clouded, our realities are eschewed and our truth is lacking because we don’t allow ourselves to look with eyes of mercy and hearts of love.

Today’s Prayer

Father, may my realities revolve around you: may you be the truth I seek and may every one of my perceptions be guided, directed and influenced by your love and presence in me.
