One’s reputation is extremely important in our day and age so it seems it might behoove us to take some care and expend some effort to ensure that we build a good, sound and responsibly respectable one.

Jesus said, “Everyone to whom much is given, of him will much be required.” – The Bible (Luke 12:48)

As Christian’s we desire much from God.  We want protection, blessings, guidance, wisdom, understanding and strength and help to succeed at the endeavors we engage in.  But what do we give Him?

In order to have a good reputation we need to have a Godly reputation.  Anything else is less than the best and is beneath what God deserves from us.

Michael Nedelsky said, “Moral responsibility is not just a matter of avoiding harm to others; it also means helping people in need.”

It would seem to me that if we really wanted to have a quality reputation we would make a renewed commitment to be more like Jesus.  Remember, His reputation was spotless for He was without sin and He always, without fail did the will of His Father.

What kind of reputation do you have?  I hope it is a Godly one.

During the course of this nations history, many men and women have and are giving their all to defend and protect these liberties and freedoms we cherish and enjoy.  So, on this Memorial Day may we honor them for their service, say a prayer for their families and show them in any way we can our appreciation and thankfulness for the sacrifices they have made.

Likewise, may we also honor and give thanks to the one who gave His all so that we might have more than just freedoms here during our lifetime; but freedom for all eternity.

Seneca the Younger wrote in his Moral Essay, ‘On the Happy Life,’ that: “To obey God is freedom.”  And a Zulu Chief, Albert Luthuli wrote in his essay, ‘The Quiet Battle,’ “The Road to Freedom Is Via the Cross.”

Scripture says, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” – The Bible (John 8:36)

So to God the Father who gave Jesus to be the sacrifice for sin – I say thanks.
To Jesus who died so that I might have life and liberty for eternity from sin, hell and death – I say thanks.
And to all the men and women who have or are serving so that I can have the freedoms and liberty to worship, and express my Christian faith – I say thanks.

Much honor is due; may we be diligent and faithful to give it.

Hopeless devotion is a concept that many don’t grasp and even fewer practice.

To be truly hopeless with devotion would mean to be totally, completely, without reservation or regard for self, committed to, bound to and if you will, indentured too another.  It would mean that the other person’s needs, best interest, welfare and security and safety would always come before your own.

Many of us may have friends or family we are devoted too, but our devotion might not escalate to the degree of hopeless devotion.

However, as Christians we do have a friend who is hopelessly devoted to us.  His name is Jesus.  He put our needs; our best interests and our welfare before His own.  And He is a friend that regardless of what He knows about us, and He knows it all, He will not forsake us, leave us alone or abandon us for any cause or reason.

We need to be equally hopelessly devoted to Him; but how many of us really are?

We may be committed to Him, even loyal to Him, but are we really, truly, completely devoted to the degree of hopeless abandonment and commitment to Him?

If we were we would have the same level of commitment to each other.

We, human beings, are predominately driven, motivated and subject to feelings and emotions.  They tend to affect us and impact just about everything we do and say.

Dale Carnegie said, “When dealing with people remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but with creatures of emotion, creatures bristling with prejudice, and motivated by pride and vanity.”

According to Alfred North Whitehead, “Ninety percent of our lives are governed by emotion.  Our brains merely register and act upon what is telegraphed to them by our bodily experience.”

 So then, what role should emotions play in our spiritual life?

Scripture tells us that we are to love the Lord with all our heart, mind and soul.   To love requires acting on emotional feelings.  

I think it is impossible to have a relationship with the Lord without letting emotions enter in.  However we want to be careful that our experience is more than just emotional feelings and that it is grounded in knowledge and understanding of who God is and what Christ has done for us.

I personally don’t believe we can have an effective relationship with the Lord without emotions and feelings: but at the same time I don’t think we have a real relationship with the Lord if all we have is feelings.  Faith without works is dead and a real relationship with God is going to impact more than just our feelings, it is going to affect what we do, what we say and how we live.

We as Christians need to emulate Christ and Jesus had many emotions but He also had more and so should we.

What do you see when you look into your mirror?  I bet you don’t see what God sees.

When God looks at you or I, He sees potential, possibility:  He sees things we can’t even begin to imagine, but often we don’t live up to His vision because we are to limited by our own perceptions.

And the greatness that God sees in us may not be what we would think of as grand or great in our limited perceptions: but rather it might be something in mans eyes that would seem insignificant and simple but in God’s view it is the ability to accomplish the plans He has for us.

Whatever your gift or talent is; whatever your abilities might be; whatever your skill; if you do your best at it and give it all your heart and do it for the Lord: it can bring glory to Him.  And what greater calling can one hope to have than to live to glorify the Lord.

When you are looking in the mirror, considering what God may see, remember this:

Do you see what God sees?  He sees great things.  Dare to live up to what He sees in you.

Have you ever stood in the middle of a crowded room and felt like you were all by yourself?

Many people have at some point or other in their lives.

But as Christians we need to remember that regardless of how dark the night or how terrible the storm and even if all our friends and family might forsake us - we are not alone.

God is always there.  He sees everything, He hears everything and He wants to be a part of everything we are going through.

It is not very Christ-like for brothers and sisters, in the faith to shun us or turn away from us, when we are going through tough times, but sometimes they do, but we need to be of good cheer and hold fast to the hope that we have in Christ Jesus, for we do not have to ever walk alone or face the troubles of this life in solitude – for He is always near, walking with us, willing to talk with us and even willing to carry us when we don’t think we can take another step.

Exactly what does it meant to be slothful?  According to the definition in the dictionary it is, “to be inactive, sluggish, lazy, indolent, or idle.”

Sadly this describes many folks who can be found in churches across the land.  Did you know that, for the most part, the majority of the work that gets done in the local church is accomplished by less than ten percent of the people who attend that church?  That is not to say all these people are totally lazy, but it does seem to indicate that they are spiritually lazy. 

Even Jesus recognized this problem when He was here on earth.  He told His disciples, “
Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.” – The Bible (Luke 10:2)

Eric Hoffer wrote in ‘New York Times Magazine,’ “Our greatest weariness comes from work not done.”  While Jules Renard wrote, “Laziness: the habit of resting before fatigue sets in.”

Regardless of which one of these two you might agree with the problem remains that there are too few people willing to step up and do what needs to be done in the church today.  Too many folks think that someone else can do it, so they don’t need to.  The truth is we all need to put our hand to the plow and labor for the Master from dawn till setting sun.

Remember Paul wrote this about the idea of works or labors for God, “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” – The Bible (James 2:26)

So what about you Brother John or Sister Sue: are you doing your part: are you doing all you can do: or are you being spiritually slothful?

Yesterday we examined the idea that we all have choices.  This reality is also true in relationship to the choices we make about the environments to which we expose ourselves to and the things we choose to surround ourselves with.

Sadly, many of us have that same attitude when it comes to things of a sinful nature.

The Fish Bowl Theory for Spiritual Growth simply states this: You will grow in relationship to the environment in which you place yourself.  Spiritually speaking if you place yourself in places where there are no other Christians and no means of nurturing your faith, you will not grow towards spiritual maturity.  That is why scripture admonishes us as such:  “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” – The Bible (Ephesians 10:24-25)

We need to be conscientious and careful about the things we allow into our lives and the things we surround ourselves with. But at the same time, we need to be willing to go out into the world and expose ourselves to the ocean of God’s possibilities rather than trying to stay secure in a little tank of comfort and self-preservation.

We cannot do all God wants us to do and become all He wants us to be by staying in a little glass bowl.  Neither can we become as effective for God as we should be if we do not constantly surround ourselves with His word, prayers and the fellowship of like-minded believers.

 It is important to be heavenly minded, but we need to also be useful on Earth to do the work and the will of our Heavenly Father.

Father, as I swim, figuratively speaking, in the rivers, streams and oceans of life, may I be bold and courageous to allow you to take me to the places where I can do the most for your, but in so going help me to always be prepared equipped and surrounded by those things that are of you and which you can use in me to accomplish your work and your will.

Each of us, at some juncture in our journey through life has probably, upon coming to a conclusion on a particular matter, stated, “I had no choice in the matter.”

Yet, in truth life is like a very extensive menu or an expansive smorgasbord; in reality, there are so many choices it seems hard to limit our options to one or two and be content with them.

Sometimes the same seems true in our spiritual life as well.  Of course the most significant and vital choice we must make is whether we will believe and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior or if we will reject the gift God is offering us in the form of salvation.

And this indeed is a choice.  God does not force us to accept Him or coerce us into believing in Him.  He is, of course; “…not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” – The Bible ( 2 Peter 3:9)   But He lets each individual choose for himself promising that, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” – The Bible (Romans 10:13)

Once this choice is made the other choices become easier.  Of course if we reject Him, we have made the choice to continue living in sin and we have decided to stay on the path to death and destruction that will lead to the eternal flames of Hell.

If we choose to accept His salvation while the natural life we live may still seem resplendent with choices, spiritually our choices become less diverse.  Either we choose to obey or we choose to disobey.

I know this is a bit of a simplification of the issue but the reality is simply that, scripture says this:  “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)  Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;” – The Bible 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts. To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.” – The Bible (Proverbs 21:2-3)

George Moore said, “The difficulty in life is the choice.”

What choice will you make?

Father, I know you want a loyal servant, not a slave, so you left the choices up to me.  So help me to choose wisely, obediently and faithfully to live for you and to defer to you when other choices need to be made.

Should It Be Freely Given or Does It Need To Be Earned

What is respect?  Webster defines it as, “A state of being held in honor or esteem: the act of holding in high estimation, deference, or honor.”

It we respect something or someone we have chosen to honor it or them to some degree and in some way.

So then begs the question, is respect to be given freely or should it have to be earned?

“Everyone should be respected as an individual, but no one idolized.” – Albert Einstein

As Christians we have no problem with the concept of honoring or respecting God, but when it comes to our fellow man, we sometimes struggle.

What does scripture teach us?

“That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.” – The Bible (John 5:23)

“Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.” – The Bible (Luke 18:20)

“Honour widows that are widows indeed.” – The Bible (1 Timothy 5:3)

“Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.” – The Bible (1 Peter 3:7)

“Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.” – The Bible (1 Peter 2:17)

It would seem God expects us to give respect, regardless of whether we perceive it to be earned or not.  

Remember scripture tells us this: “…The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.  And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.” – The Bible (Mark 12:29-31)

To love, we must respect, so to obey we must honor God first and humanity second.

Keep in mind every person represents a soul that Jesus died for.  He loved each one enough to die for them: you don’t get much more honored and respected than that.

We need to honor all saints and sinners, but remember we don’t have to respect the sin, just the soul.
