Daily Thought for Monday April 11th

Spiritual Atheism

“ The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.”
– The Bible (Psalms 14:1(a))

Today’s Thought:

”All things speak of God.” Edward Young
“Eternal King, thee
Author of all being.
Fountain of Light, thy self invisible.”
– John Milton (Referring to God in ‘Paradise Lost’)

Today’s Question

God, “Who is He? I can think of no better answer than, He who is.” – St. Bermard

Today’s Spiritual Thought:

“A majority of people are not theoretical atheists, the are practical atheists.
They do not deny the existence of God with their lips,
but they are continually denying his existence with their lives.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.

As Christians we are without doubt not Atheists.

An Atheist does not believe in God or that He exists.

The first pre-requisite to becoming a Christian is to believe there is a God.

“Either God exists or He doesn’t.  Either I believe in God or I don’t.
Of the four possibilities, only one is to my disadvantage.
To avoid that possibility, I believe in God.”
- Blaise Pascal

You may call this the twisted logic of a non-atheist but I would rather believe and be wrong than not believe and be wrong – but of course, we all know I’m right.

The problem is not that we as Christians don’t believe in God, it is rather that we act like we don’t believe God is real and that He means what He says.

In a sense we behave like spiritual atheists.

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”
- The Bible (2 Timothy 3:1-5)

I can’t help but wonder, in God’s eyes, which is worse, the one who says He isn’t or the one who says He is but ignores everything He stands for and doesn’t do the things He says.

Remember He has said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” – The Bible (John 14:15)

I don’t think most of us would consider ourselves to be Spiritual Atheists, but then again what would our actions and deeds say?

“Don’t be agnostic – be something.”
- Robert Frost

And that something we need to be is all that we can be by giving our best to the one we profess we believe in.

Today’s Verses:

For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the Lord abhorreth. The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them. He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity. His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and Fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity. He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor. He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net.  He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones.  He hath said in his heart, God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will never see it.
                        Psalm 10:3-11

And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
Exodus 3:14

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
                        Revelation 1:8

Today’s Prayer:

Father, forgive me for any agnostic tendencies in behavior I may exhibit for I do believe and I want the world to have no doubts as to the sincerity and genuineness of my commitment to you.
