A Series of Spiritual Ponderings
With Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn
This here series may seem a bit peculiar to some of ya’ll folks: but then life itself can be a tad bit peculiar some of the time. Over the next few days the writer of these here thoughts has decided to take a gander at some spiritual insights from the perspective of Tom and Huck, a couple of characters from Mr. Mark Twains novels.
First
‘The Truth’
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
- John 8:31-32
Quote of the Day
“The reason we hold truth in such respect is because we take so little opportunity to get familiar with it.” – Mark Twain
Today’s Thoughts and Insights
“Truth is stranger than fiction – to some people, but I am measurably familiar with it.” - Mark Twain
Huck – That there idea of truth; specially the gospel truth: Now there’s a thought that might make a feller think until his brain hurt.
Tom – Naw Huck, it’s not so complicated as all that, ya just got to accept it for the simple truth that it is.
Huck – And just what would that be Tom?
Tom digs into the dirt with his toe, scratches his head a bit and then steps up on a stump to illuminate the mind and hopefully the heart of his closest friend as he prepares to orate on the simplicity of the gospel truth about truth.
Ya see Huck , it’s like this, God is nothing but truth. He ain’t capable of telling no whoppers of lies like you and me is. Everything He says is truth and everything He does is based on the truth – so for them that believe in Him it’s pretty simple: they just has to take Him at His word and know that He won’t never misguide or misdirect em in any way, shape form or fashion. And if’n ya really get to know Him good and proper like: then your life will be filled with the truth and you’ll never be misguided or misdirected again. To put it plan and simple Huck, you just got to believe He is everything He says He is and He will do everything He promises to without ever missing a thang that’s a goin on. And that if’n you’ll do that your life will be better than a big ol’ slice of Aunt Polly’s apple crumb pie with a chunk of a slice of sharp cheddar cheese on top.
Huck – Ya reckon that’s the truth of it then, huh Tom?
Tom – I reckon that there be the plain and simple God’s honest truth, Huck.
Huck – I reckon it must be so then if you say so Tom.
Tom – No Huck not cause I says so, but because God says so.
Today’s Prayer
Father, you are truth, your righteous and you are my hope and all glory belongs to you. Help me to not overcomplicate the simplicity of your truth – but instead help me to just embrace it; accept it and live by it.
“If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything.”
– Mark Twain
“I’m forgiven, because you were forsaken;
I’m accepted, you were condemned:
I’m alive and well, your spirit is within me,
Because you died and rose again.
Amazing love, How can it be
That you my King would die for me?
Amazing love, I know it’s true:
And it’s my joy to honor you,
In all I do, let me honor you. “
- Lyrics from ‘Amazing Love’ by Billy James Foote
