Thought for Satruday, April 21st

A Series of Spiritual Ponderings
With Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn

This here series may seem a bit peculiar to some of ya’ll folks: but then life itself can be a tad bit peculiar some of the time.  Over the next few days the writer of these here thoughts has decided to take a gander at some spiritual insights from the perspective of Tom and Huck, a couple of characters from Mr. Mark Twains novels.

The Last
Can’t Man nor Boy Live Without A Sense of Humor

A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.
Proverbs 15:13

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
Proverbs 17:22

Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works. Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment. Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun. Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
Ecclesiastes 9:7-10

Quote of the Day

“Humor must be one of the chief attributes of God.” – Mark Twain

Today’s Thoughts and Insights:

If’n a feller can’t learn to laugh and even laugh at his-self from time to time then he’s just went and lost the ability to live a full and complete life.

Mr. Twain said it best when he said, “Humor must not professedly teach, and it must not professedly preach, but it must do both if it would live forever.”

He also said, “Genuine humor is replete with wisdom.”

I reckon there can’t be a man nor boy who could truly get by without some sort of sense of humor – especially if’n he’s gonna hang around with me and Huck for a while.

And after all don’t ya reckon God is got a sense of humor?  I mean if’n ya take a good long look at some of the things us human folks up and does with consistent regularity – God would have to have a sense of humor or He would have given up on mankind a long time ago.

Mr. Mark Twain also said , “Against the assault of laughter, nothing can stand.”  And I be reckon’n he is right.

I know when I have the down-in-the-mouth; hang dog feelin’s of despair:  if’n I can find somethin’ to make me laugh – life seems a whole lot better.

Maybe if we could just learn to laugh more, love better and hate less – this world might just be a tad bit more of a tolerable place to be.

Today’s Prayer

Father, I know I must keep you laughing a lot because I do some of the strangest things sometimes.  Help me to see the joy in all things, the humor in what could be humorless and the hope that makes me want to make someone smile and the willingness to go the extra step and to even try to help them find something worth laughing about.

“Humor is one of mankind’s greatest blessings.”
– Mark Twain

I’m forgiven, because you were forsaken;
I’m accepted, you were condemned:
I’m alive and well, your spirit is within me,
Because you died and rose again.
Amazing love, How can it be
That you my King would die for me?
Amazing love, I know it’s true:
And it’s my joy to honor you,
In all I do, let me honor you.
-  Lyrics from ‘Amazing Love’ by Billy James Foote
