With Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn
This here series may seem a bit peculiar to some of ya’ll folks: but then life itself can be a tad bit peculiar some of the time. Over the next few days the writer of these here thoughts has decided to take a gander at some spiritual insights from the perspective of Tom and Huck, a couple of characters from Mr. Mark Twains novels.

About Creation
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
- Genesis 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
John 1:1-4
Quote of the Day
“It all began with Adam. He was the first man to tell a joke – or a lie. How lucky Adam was. He knew when he said a good thing, nobody had said it before. Adam was not alone in the Garden of Eden, however, and does not deserve all the credit; much is due to Eve, the first woman, and Satan, the first consultant.” – Mark Twain
Today’s Thoughts and Insights
Huck – Tom, how do ya reckon we ended up here?
Tom – What ya getting at Huck?
Huck – Well I hear tell there’s all these planets and stars out there in the sky somewhere: so reckon how it is we ended up here on this one?
Tom stares at his best friend with a look of contemplative wonder and he says:
Well Huck as I understand if from all them Bible classes and sermons Aunt Polly made me endure and all them Bible lectures I get from Mary and Sid that we is here cause that’s just the way God wanted it to be. The way this story goes, from all I can figure: is everything started out as nothing and then God just said be there and it was.
Huck – God must be mighty powerful if His words can just make things exist.
Tom – I spose He’s just bout the most powerful of anybody I done ever heard about. Fact is He just spoke and the sun and moon was: He just spoke and day and night happened: He just spoke and all them critters just started walkin’ round the garden. I reckon the only part of creation that wasn’t just spoke was when He decided to make ol’ Adam and He took dirt and smooshed it all together; done some more fancy shapin’ and formin’ with His hands and laid Adams body down there on the ground, gave him a big ol puff of air and then Adam came to life.
Huck – So how’d Eve get there then?
Tom – We’ll seems God pondered on it a mite and decided Adam needed somebody to keep him from getting all bored with his self; so He put ol’ Adam to sleep and then went and took away one of his ribs and then afore ya could a spit at a cat – there was Eve.
Huck - Now that there sounds pretty all fired amazing to me Tom.
Tom - We’ll now Huck, I reckon when God goes and does something it usually is a pretty all fired special and amazing thing.
Huck – Reckon so.
Today’s Prayer
Father, you are amazing, wonderful and powerful and I am in awe of your creations. May I celebrate all that your hands have done and may I allow you to continue to create in me a clean heart, a pure spirit and a willing soul that longs to do your work and accomplish your will.
“This is the day upon which we are reminded of what we are [and of just how we came to be here].”
– Mark Twain
“I’m forgiven, because you were forsaken;
I’m accepted, you were condemned:
I’m alive and well, your spirit is within me,
Because you died and rose again.
Amazing love, How can it be
That you my King would die for me?
Amazing love, I know it’s true:
And it’s my joy to honor you,
In all I do, let me honor you. “
- Lyrics from ‘Amazing Love’ by Billy James Foote
