Easter Week, Day Five
Turmoil and Confusion for the Disciples

And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.  Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.  And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.  And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:  (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God. This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
- Luke 23:46-52

Quote of the Day

“Light of the world, You stepped down into darkness, open my eyes let me see.
King of all days oh so highly exalted; Glorious in Heaven above:  Humbly you came to the earth you created: All for loves sake became poor.
And I’ll never know how much it cost to see my sins upon that cross – So here I am to worship: here I am to bow down: here I am to say that You’re my God.  Your altogether lovely; altogether worthy: altogether wonderful to me.” – Tim Hughes (lyrics from ‘Here I Am To Worship’)

Today’s Thoughts and Insights

The gates and doors were barred
And all the windows fastened down
I spent the night in sleeplessness
And rose at every sound
Half in hopeless sorrow
And half in fear the day
Would find the soldiers breakin' through
To drag us all away
And just before the sunrise
I heard something at the wall
The gate began to rattle
And a voice began to call
I hurried to the window
Looked down into the street
Expecting swords and torches
And the sound of soldiers' feet
But there was no one there but Mary
So I went down to let her in
John stood there beside me
As she told me where she'd been
She said they might have moved Him in the night
And none of us knows where
The stone's been rolled away
And now His body isn't there
We both ran toward the garden
Then John ran on ahead
We found the stone and empty tomb
Just the way that Mary said
But the winding sheet they wrapped Him in
Was just an empty shell
And how or where they'd taken Him
Was more than I could tell
Oh something strange had happened there
Just what I did not know
John believed a miracle
But I just turned to go
Circumstance and speculation
Couldn't lift me very high
'Cause I'd seen them crucify him
Then I saw him die
Back inside the house again
The guilt and anguish came
Everything I'd promised Him
Just added to my shame
When at last it came to choices
I denied I knew His name
And even if He was alive
It wouldn't be the same
But suddenly the air was filled
With a strange and sweet perfume
Light that came from everywhere
Drove the shadows from the room
And Jesus stood before me
With his arms held open wide
And I fell down on my knees
And I just clung to Him and cried
Then He raised me to my feet
And as I looked into His eyes
The love was shining out from Him
Like sunlight from the skies
Guilt in my confusion
Dissappeared in sweet release
And every fear I'd ever had
Just melted into peace.

Today’s Prayer

Father, sometimes just like the disciples in those days immediately following Jesus death, we doubt; falter; have uncertainties and even question your promises and your word: forgive our unbelief, increase our faith and may we never falter or fail to recognize and live in your power, by your spirit.

“How great is our God?
The splendor of the King; clothed in majesty:
And age to age He stands; and time is in His hands:
Beginning and the End:
Godhead there in one:
Name above all names;
Worthy of my praise;
My heart will sing
How great is our God.”
– Chris Tomlin, Ed Cash & Jesse Reeves (lyrics from ‘How Great Is Our God’)

I’m forgiven, because you were forsaken;
I’m accepted, you were condemned:
I’m alive and well, your spirit is within me,
Because you died and rose again.
Amazing love, How can it be
That you my King would die for me?
Amazing love, I know it’s true:
And it’s my joy to honor you,
In all I do, let me honor you.
-  Lyrics from ‘Amazing Love’ by Billy James Foote
