Freaks and Geeks
The Spiritual Implications

Today’s Thought:
A man must consider what a rich realm he abdicates when he becomes a conformist.  – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Today’s Quote:

“What we are is God’s gift to us. What we become is our gift to God.” – Eleanor Powell

Today’s Question

Have you ever considered how important it is to: “Be yourself and think for yourself; and, while your conclusions may not be infallible, they will be nearer right than the conclusions forced upon you?”     Elbert Hubbard

Today’s Bible Verses:                   Romans 12:1-2 & John 15:18-21

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.  If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you  Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.  But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.

Today’s Spiritual Thought:

A diamond is a chunk of coal that made good under pressure.   Unknown

What is a freak?  A freak is someone who is, “oddly different from what is usual or normal.” – Webster’s Dictionary

What is a geek?  Geek is a slang word but it is used to describe a person who is, “regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy: A person who is felt to be socially inept.” – The Free Dictionary by Farlex

So then, by definition it is safe to say that a freak or a geek is someone who is a nonconformist by most social standards and as an individual they stand out or stand apart from the norm.

Should that not be our desire as Christians?  Shouldn’t we want to stand out: shouldn’t we strive to be different from the world’s sense of normal?  Shouldn’t we have a deep burning desire to be unique and different, in a way that will bring glory and honor to God?

I believe both naturally and spiritually there is a modicum of freak or geek in each of us.  Many learn to repress it and keep it from taking hold of them, but spiritually speaking, I think it’s time to get our freak on and be a little bit geeky for the cause of Christ.

He has promised to use the simple and foolish things of this world to confound the wise.
“But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;  And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea,  and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:.” – The Bible (1 Corinthians 1:27-28)

We need to remember this:

“We are Pilgrims in a strange land
We are so far from our homeland
With each passing day it seems so clear
This world will never want us here
We're not welcome in this world of wrong
We are foreigners who don't belong
We are strangers, we are aliens
We are not of this world
We are envoys we must tarry
With this message we must carry
There's so much to do before we leave
With so many more who may believe
Our mission here can never fail
And the gates of hell will not prevail.”
– Bob Harman (lyrics from ‘Not of This World’)

If I have to be a freak: a geek or a freaky geek to be different in the worlds eyes, I would count it as an honor and a privilege: How about you?

“Unholy ambition never succeeds well in anything, nor will the Great Creator reveal His secrets to those who only desire is to shine in the eyes of men. But the light of Heaven will shine all around the man who humbly and fervently asks for more light, more light.” – Fanny Jackson Coppin

Our ambition is not to be a freak or a geek for our own benefit but rather to stand out and be different for God’s Glory.

Are you ready to get your geek or freak on for the Lord?

Today’s Prayer:

Father, let your light shine on me and may I be freakishly different from what this world considers normal, politically correct and socially and sinfully acceptable and may I be a geek to the highest power for your honor and glory.
