Prioritizing Priorities

“If Christians demanded more manifestations of Christened presence instead of being content with ritual, we mite see more of God’s glory.”
-       Morgan Clough

Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:  And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up. And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth: But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.  And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.  And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Mark  4:3-9

Have you ever known a person who seemed to have all of their priorities in life out of order?  We have all, probably known someone who just couldn’t seem to get it together when it comes to figuring out what is really important in life.

Sadly, I have known far too many Christians who have that same type of problem when it comes to their spiritual life.  In our churches today we seem to have become so overwhelmed with the order of service and the style of presentation within the structure of our praise and worship times: that we have virtually overlooked the single most important priority of all – and that is to connect with God.

Rather than being concerned with which pew we always sit in or if we get to shake hands with the pastor: we should be so desperate to be in God’s presence that we won’t let anything keep us from Him.

We become so focused on our needs and desires that we neglect to consider that person who may not even know who God is.

We tend to believe there is a set formula that if implemented to precision will insure that we have a spiritual experience that will satisfy our longings and pacify our soul.

The truth of the matter is the greatest priority that we need to have as Christians is the pursuit of satisfying and insatiable appetite and desire to have more of God in our lives and to be more connected to Him in everything we do.

Yet, it seems from the speed with which we exit a service and the immediate transfer of our thoughts and attentions as soon as the last amen is said that we have somehow, by in large, as a body of believers, missed the mark and we seem to have our priorities out of order.

Wouldn’t’ it be wonderful if collectively we could fix this problem and we all could have Him as our number one priority?  Somehow, I think if we did, everything else would fall into its proper place and we would no longer need to worry about how to prioritize other things.

Today’s Prayer

Father, help me to get my priorities straight and may my foremost, first and what could and maybe should be my only priority become You.

Purify my heart
Let me be as gold
And precious silver
Purify my heart
Cleanse me from within
And make me holy
Refiner’s fire
My hearts one desire
Is to be holy
Set apart for You my Master
Ready to do your will.“
-  Lyrics from ‘Refiner’s Fire’ by Brian Doerksen
