Oh to Be Content
“Better a little with content than much with contention.”
- Anonymous
Behold, O God our shield, and look upon the face of thine anointed. For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.
Psalms 84:9-12
How many truly content people do you know?
Real genuine contentment means you are completely satisfied with where you are, what you have and what is going on in your life.
Very few of us can lay claim to being totally content.
And on an extremely spiritual level, I think we should not necessary want to be content. Inasmuch as we should always long for and desire more of the Lord and a deeper and more meaningful relationship with Him, there seems to indeed be some room for some measure of not being satisfied;
Yet, I can’t help but wonder if we would learn to be content in all the other aspects and areas of our lives: if maybe this would not help facilitate us having and experiencing that deeper connection with our Heavenly Father and elder brother, Jesus.
Most the people I encounter want more of something. Whether it is more time to do what they feel they need to get done: more appreciation for the things they are doing: more financial security and abundance so they can feel more secure and content: more acceptance and acknowledgement from their peers and associates: or just to feel more loved and accepted: most everyone wants more of something.
Jesus said His grace Is sufficient to meet all of our needs: do we take Him at His word and are we willing to be content with what He brings to us, knowing that He knows what we need even better than we do?
Contentment – I wonder how many of us have ever truly experienced it in its purest form?
Today’s Prayer
Father, forgive my daily discontent and help me to do more than just realize that you are all I really need: help me to act like I really believe it.
“Purify my heart
Let me be as gold
And precious silver
Purify my heart
Cleanse me from within
And make me holy
Refiner’s fire
My hearts one desire
Is to be holy
Set apart for You my Master
Ready to do your will.“
- Lyrics from ‘Refiner’s Fire’ by Brian Doerksen
