Thought for Tuesday, October 9th

It’s About the Bent of Your Mind

“The mind is like the stomach.  It is not how much you put in that counts, but how much it digests.”
-       Albert Jay Nock

For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.  For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.  So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
Romans   8:5-8

What’s in your mind?  Or maybe it might be more appropriate to ask, what’s on your mind?

Do most of your thoughts revolve around what you want: what you are doing; or what you want to do: or do they revolve around what God wants: what God is doing or what God might want to do in and through you?

Different people have varied processes for their approach to thinking.  Some of us are very methodical and analytical, while others of us may be scattered and random in our thought processes.   Many have short attention spans and find it difficult to focus on one particular thought or thought process for more than a very short time.  And in truth for most of us; we probably have thousands of thoughts a day and most assuredly every one of them is not a spiritual thought on a God oriented or centered matter.  But overall do you think more about God and the things of His kingdom than you do other things?

For some just concentrating and thinking about God during the pastors sermon on Sunday morning is a challenge, much less any other time of the week.

But shouldn’t our main focus: the greater percentage of our thought time be on things such as prayer, God’s Word and the things He either is or might want to be doing in our lives?

I’m almost certain that if we were all honest with ourselves: we would be left with no other alternative but to admit; we could certainly do with some improvement when it comes to the bent of or mental functions and the quantity, as well as quality of the spiritual things we think about each day.

Today’s Prayer

Father, I must confess my mind is a very busy place: but sadly not enough of my thought time is spent on you and the things of your kingdom.  Help me to improve and though every thought may not be about you specifically, may my attitude, my focus and my general bent always be towards you and about you.

Purify my heart
Let me be as gold
And precious silver
Purify my heart
Cleanse me from within
And make me holy
Refiner’s fire
My hearts one desire
Is to be holy
Set apart for You my Master
Ready to do your will.“
-  Lyrics from ‘Refiner’s Fire’ by Brian Doerksen
