Spiritual Schizophrenia
A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
James 1:8
“White shall not neutralize the black, nor good
Compensate bad in man,…”
- Robert Browning
Schizophrenia and Spiritual Schizophrenia only have one commonality and they should not be confused in any other way. A person suffering from schizophrenia is often subject to their disability; but a Spiritual schizophrenic chooses the path on which they travel.
A spiritual schizophrenic is identifiable by such behavioral indicators as this: they say they love God with all their heart but they treat their fellow man with derision or hatred. They say they want a deeper relationship with God but they seldom pray, except in an emergency and they never take time to read His word. They go to church on Sunday and lift up their hands and talk all super spiritual, but they cuss and rant and live like the devil the rest of the week when they think their church friends aren’t looking. I know these examples typify extremes and there are many who may suffer from this spiritual disorder to lesser degrees and in some form of moderation: but spiritual schizophrenia is out there and God has just the prescription to help cure it.
His solution is found in Matthew:
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
Matthew 6:19-24
While it is often tempting to try to serve God and serve the pleasures of this world, we as Christian’s need to take a stand like the prophet of old and choose this day who we will serve.
Today’s Prayer
Father, may my heart, my mind, my body and my soul be totally committed to serving You and You alone.
