Spiritual Freaks and Geeks
For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God, and the Lord hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.
Deuteronomy 14:2

Labels seem to be very commonplace in our society today. We like to label people by classifying or categorizing them. And amongst the many labels we have in our society are those of ‘a freak’ or ‘a geek.’
To be a freak requires that one be odd, unusual, existing somewhere outside of what is conventionally considered the norm, to probably some more extreme level: while to be a geek is to be peculiar by many of the same classifications with slightly different parameters. But, to be either or both a ‘freak’ or a ‘geek’ one must not fit in, in some way to the prevailing acceptance of normalcy for a given social dynamic.
Therefore, it is my contingency that as Christian’s, at least on a spiritual level, that we are called to be ‘Spiritual Freaks and Geeks’ for the cause of Christ.
We need to stand out, be different and not conform to the world’s view of what is socially, morally and ethically acceptable. We need to be courageous, unique and different from our non Christian counterparts.
I realize some of us, as Christians give the idea of Spiritual Freak or Geekism a new meaning, but some of us give it no meaning at all.
A good guideline at to how to go about being a Spiritual Freak or Geek is found in Deuteronomy 26:
This day the Lord thy God hath commanded thee to do these statutes and judgments: thou shalt therefore keep and and do them with all thine heart, and with all thy soul. Thou hast avouched the Lord this day to be thy God, and to walk in his ways, and to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and to hearken unto his voice: And the Lord hath avouched thee this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all his commandments; And to make thee high above all nations which he hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honour; and that thou mayest be an holy people unto the Lord thy God, as he hath spoken.
Deuteronomy 26:16-19
And we can find even further directives in Titus:
But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
Titus 2:1-15
I can’t think of a better label to wear, if I am going to have to wear one than being counted among the peculiar and being classified as a ‘freak’ or ‘geek’ for God; what about you?
Today’s Prayer
Father, help me to be the best spiritual freak or geek I can be; as long as my peculiarity brings glory and honor to you and doesn’t take away from it.
