Who Are You Hopelessly Devoted To
“Sometimes if you’re lucky,
someone comes into your life
who’ll take a place in your heart that no one else can fill,
someone who’s tighter than a twin,
more with you than your own shadow,
who gets deeper under your skin than your own blood and bones..”
- Snoopp Doggl
Today’s Thought:
“The only way to have friends is to be one.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Today’s Question
Did you know: “A Brother [Sister] may not be a Friend, but a Friend will always be a Brother [Sister]?” - Benjamin Franklin
Today’s Spiritual Thought:
“To bear each other’s burdens,
never to ask each other for anything inconsistent with virtue and rectitude,
and not only to serve and to love but also to respect each other
To give and receive advice – the former with freedom and without bitterness,
the latter with patience and without irritation
- is peculiarly appropriate to genuine friendship .”
- Cicero
“A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”
- The Bible (Proverbs 17:17)
“A friend is, as it were, a second half.”
– Cicero
Hopeless devotion is a concept that many don’t grasp and even fewer practice.
To be truly hopeless with devotion would mean to be totally, completely, without reservation or regard for self, committed to, bound to and if you will, indentured too another. It would mean that the other person’s needs, best interest, welfare and security and safety would always come before your own.
Many of us may have friends or family we are devoted too, but our devotion might not escalate to the degree of hopeless devotion.
However, as Christians we do have a friend who is hopelessly devoted to us. His name is Jesus. He put our needs; our best interests and our welfare before His own. And He is a friend that regardless of what He knows about us, and He knows it all, He will not forsake us, leave us alone or abandon us for any cause or reason.
We need to be equally hopelessly devoted to Him; but how many of us really are?
We may be committed to Him, even loyal to Him, but are we really, truly, completely devoted to the degree of hopeless abandonment and commitment to Him?
If we were we would have the same level of commitment to each other.
Today’s Verses:
Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
Proverbs 27:6 & 17
This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
John 15:12-14
Today’s Prayer:
Father, though I may be devoted to you, I know I often fall far short of hopeless devotion, so help me to do better and forgive me for the many times I fail.
