Live Worthy of Your Name
Today’s Thought:
“Our names are labels, printed clearly on the bottled essence of our past.” – Logan Pearsall Smith
Today’s Quote:
“I would rather make my name than inherit it!” – William Thackeray
Today’s Question:
Have you ever heard the Roman saying, “Nomen est omen?” It means, “In name is destiny.” – A Roman Saying
Today’s Bible Verses: Revelation 2:17, Revelation 3:5 & Revelations 3:11-12
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
Today’s Spiritual Thought:
“For every man there is something in the vocabulary that would stick to him like a second skin.” – Ambrose Bierce
William Shakespeare’s asked; “What is in a name?”
Names and labels may mean different things to different people. Many of us have affectionate nicknames for our children or spouses based on characteristics or traits that may stand out to us. Sometimes our friends at different stages of our life have nicknames by which they call us. And of course we all have our given names, which, for the most part, our parents pondered over for months in choosing for one particular reason or another. Often our names refer to our position and place in the lives of others; such as mother, farther, brother, etc. And depending on that given relationship the meaning of that name can be different to varied individuals. Then of course there are those names we are called that we will not talk about here.
But spiritually speaking, there is really only one name worthy, as a Christian, for us to aspire to live up to; and that is the name we are given by God. His name, as we become adopted by blood through Christ Jesus and become heirs and joint heirs in His eternal Kingdom.
While I may attempt to live up to names given me by family or peers, the only name that will matter when I stand before God, face to face, is the one by which He calls me.
I don’t’ know about you but that is one name I would love to live worthy of.
Today’s Prayer:
Father, help me to live worthily of the honor that having your name on my life brings.
“It ain’t what they call you, it’s what you answer to.”
- W, C. Fields
