Pride and The Modern Day Christian
Today’s Thought:
“Pride breakfasted with plenty, dined with poverty, and supped with infamy.” – Benjamin Franklin
Today’s Quote:
“When you know you’ve got humility, you’ve lost it. Humility is to make a right estimate of one’s self.” – Charles Spurgeon
Today’s Question:
Would you concur with the notion that: “The proud man counts his newspaper clippings – the humble his blessings?” – Bishop Fulton J. Sheen
Today’s Bible Verses: Proverbs 16:18-19, Proverbs 11:2 & Proverbs 27:1-2
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.
Today’s Spiritual Thought:
“Swallow your pride occasionally. It’s not fattening.” – Frank Tyger
As Christians what do we have to boast about?
In and of ourselves – probably not much! But because of who God is in us, we have much to brag about.
Keep in mind salvation is not earned, nor merited, rather it is a gift: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” - The Bible (Ephesians 2:8-9)
And we all know that it is not our righteousness that enables us to do good things but it is the righteousness of God at work within us.
Our pride should only be of God and for God. It should be in Christ crucified, resurrected, and coming again soon to receive us: so that we can live eternally with Him.
All that we are and all that we do, even all that we may have is by God’s graciousness and favor.
It is he that blesses us, enabling us to bless others.
We need to remember pride in our own merits will lead us to sin and thus affect our relationship with God. We need to be humble and boast only in Him and Him alone.
Today’s Prayer:
Father, I am weak, but you are strong: and I know all my strength, my effectiveness in what I may endeavor to do comes from your Holy Spirit within me. Your power, your presence, your peace, your hope, your love and your works within: so for this I honor and thank you that you honor me by allowing me to honor your with my service.
“Be humble or you’ll stumble.”
- Dwight L. Moody
