The Good – The Bad – And The Better
The optimist considers that when something is good; it could get better: while the pessimist figures that if things are good the only possibility is that they will somehow, someway take a turn for the worse and that bad things are ahead.
Spiritually speaking we have a lot of pessimists in the church. Those who when good things are happening they proclaim it will not last: and when things are a bit tough they predict that it is only going to get worse.
But in God’s economy when things are tough and things look bad: we need to look up for our redemption is drawing closer and with God when things look at their worst: it means that better things are coming. Because spiritually speaking when the devil is putting up his biggest fight: it only means God is getting ready to do a great and mighty work and victory and glory are just around the corner.
“Out of the scabbard of the night,
By God’s hand drawn,
Flashes his shining sword of light,
And lo the dawn.”
- Frank Dempster Sherman
I Will extol thee, O Lord; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me. O Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me. O Lord, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness. For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
Psalms 30:1-5
While it may be true that the darkest part of the night comes just before the dawn: there is a parallel spiritual application to this too. Things may look bad but they are always going to get better when it comes to kingdom living and kingdom things.
If things are good they can be better: and when things are bad you know there going to get better and when things are better you know that they are still going to get better even yet again. Because for a Christian the ultimate best that is yet to come will come when we see Him face to face.
Today’s Prayer
Father, by your spirit, help me to be a spiritual optimist always looking for your mighty wonders and the working of your hands: regardless of the circumstances or the appearances of the situation I may find myself in.
“Give me your eyes
For just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see
Everything that I’ve been missing
Give me your love for humanity.
Give me your arms for the brokenhearted
Ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see“
- Lyrics from ‘Give Me Your Eyes’ by Brandon Heath and Jason Ingram
