Got Understanding?
“Nothing can be loved or hated unless it is first know.”
- Leonardo da Vinci
Wouldn’t you like to have a dollar for every time you are asked in a life time if you understand something?
To claim that we understand an idea or concept implies that we grasp the full meaning of what is stands for; what it represents; or how it is suppose to work.
To understand something, does not necessarily have to mean that we agree with it; it just simply means we comprehend the scope and fullness of what ever it is: for good, bad or indifferent.
To really understand a matter or a thing it means we move beyond just the surface of its concept and we get to the heart of the matter where the reality of what is and isn’t real, right or true really exists.
“One learns people through the heart, not the eyes of the intellect.”
- Mark Twain
To know wisdom and instruction; To discern the words of understanding; To receive instruction in wise dealing, In righteousness and justice and equity; To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion:
That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; And that the man of understanding may attain unto sound counsels: To understand a proverb, and a figure, The words of the wise, and their dark sayings. The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; But the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:2-7
Some say beauty is in the eye of the person observing it – but often the true beauty in a thing, concept or person are way beyond the observable surface and the reality of who or what is truly beautiful, especially in God’s sight, comes from garnering more than a knowledge of – and reaches to the depths of grasping and garnering a true understanding of whatever you might be dealing with.
When it comes to God we need to move beyond just a surface knowledge of who He is and what He is all about and we need to grasp a deep and meaningful understanding of Him and what His role in our lives needs to be.
If we could but get that level of understanding – our lives would more than likely be revolutionized.
Today’s Prayer
Father: may I go beyond the outer surface of just knowing you and may I understand more fully just who you are and what you want to be in my life.
“Give me your eyes
For just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see
Everything that I’ve been missing
Give me your love for humanity.
Give me your arms for the brokenhearted
Ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see“
- Lyrics from ‘Give Me Your Eyes’ by Brandon Heath and Jason Ingram
