The Soul of the Matter

The secular connotation of having soul implies a deep connection to something within oneself which enables them to feel deeply and emote passionately.

Spiritually speaking having a soul is a bit more of an eternal issue which transcends feeling or passion and instead refers to that part of an individual that will exist for all eternity in either Heaven or hell.  We refer to salvation as asking Jesus to come into our hearts; but we also refer to the experience as the Lord saving our soul.

The truth is we can not save our own soul; but then the question that comes to mind is what exactly can we do with our soul?

“Be careless in your dress if you must, but keep a tidy soul.”
-       Mark Twain

And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, and the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.   And he spake the saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.  But he turning about, and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, and saith, Get thee behind me, Satan; for thou mindest not the things of God, but the things of men.   And he called unto him the multitude with his disciples, and said unto them, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.   For whosoever would save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's shall save it.  For what doth it profit a man, to gain the whole world, and forfeit his life?  For what should a man give in exchange for his life?
Mark 8:31-37

The biggest decision we can make regarding our soul is whether or not we are going to surrender it to God or whether we are going to keep it to ourselves.

Once that decision is made it then becomes incumbent on us, especially if we have surrendered our soul to God to nurture it by reading His word, praying, praising and fellowshipping with others of like faith.
Many believe that our soul is the embodiment of our spiritual person and if we believe thus; we need to take care to keep our soul in good spiritual health by eating right (spiritual nourishment) and exercising regularly (prayer and praising).

And then we need to take our soul out and about in our physical body so that by God’s intervention it can influence our body and mind to serve and minister to other souls in need.

Today’s Prayer

Father, may my body, mind and soul be yours and yours alone and may they work in unity to perpetuate your will and do your work here in this world.

Give me your eyes
For just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see
Everything that I’ve been missing
Give me your love for humanity.
Give me your arms for the brokenhearted
Ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see“
-  Lyrics from ‘Give Me Your Eyes’ by Brandon Heath and Jason Ingram
