You Are What Is In Your Heart

Often in the Christian world I have heard it said that a man is what He thinks himself to be in His heart.    Or maybe more accurately a man is the product of what he adds to his heart by way of what he values as important and worthwhile in his life.

So what is the output of our hearts if our hearts can only produce what we put in to them?

Are we yielding a product of praise, adoration, obedience and love: or does the output of our heart look more like self centered egotism and ambitions that will further our own cause and desires rather than that of what God’s might be for us?

“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts {Treasures of your heart}… Take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature.”
-       Marcus Aurelius

O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.  But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.  For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Matthew 12:34-37

Are we God orientated in our hearts desires?  Are we Jesus centered in our ambitions and objectives?  Is our motivational impetus the Holy Spirit or are we driven by some force more earthly and self oriented?

Since we are what is in our heart: are we Christ-like or are we something else all together?

Do the rivers of God’s love, joy, peace, hope, kindness, generosity, compassion and graciousness flow forth from our hearts?

If not maybe we need a little heart surgery to be performed by the Great Physician to remove the obstructions to His will and His way for us and to open the arteries of our life to flow more freely with His power and presence: His influence and mercy and His love and grace.

Today’s Prayer

Father, you are the glorious and mighty one: the most amazing and majestic: may my heart be filled with those things that are of you and out of my heart may the rivers of your presence, life and love flow freely to touch those around me.

Give me your eyes
For just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see
Everything that I’ve been missing
Give me your love for humanity.
Give me your arms for the brokenhearted
Ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see“
-  Lyrics from ‘Give Me Your Eyes’ by Brandon Heath and Jason Ingram
