Getting It Right

Do you ever struggle with the concept of getting it right when it comes to doing things God’s way?  Do you ever feel you must have missed the boat somewhere along the way, figuratively speaking?

If you do, you are not alone.  Most of us at some point, often at many points and junctures along the way on our spiritual journey feel we have made a wrong turn or missed the mark somehow, in some way.  And often times we have.  We must remember we are not yet perfect and we won’t be until we reach our eternal destination.  However, that does not mean that our energies and efforts should not be focused on and aimed at getting it right for God.  That is why grace, mercy and forgiveness are such a vital part of our relationship with our Heavenly Father.  He knows that we will not always be perfect but He cherishes and longs for our willingness to keep trying and getting better with each attempt.

Living for God is like many other habits, talents and abilities that we may develop: the more we do it: the more energy and effort we put into it: the better we get at it.

You’re playing all the wrong notes.
I’m playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order.
-       Andre Previn and Eric Morecambe

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.  But ye have not so learned Christ; If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;  And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.  And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.  Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:  And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:17-32

We are not called to perfection as children and servants of God but we are called to make a commitment and to have a willingness to keep on keeping on and to be striving towards perpetual improvement in our spiritual lives.

Today’s Prayer

Father, You, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are the only ones who are truly perfect.  And though I may not be perfect and I may make a mistake along the way: help me to never stop striving to get it right for you.

Give me your eyes
For just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see
Everything that I’ve been missing
Give me your love for humanity.
Give me your arms for the brokenhearted
Ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see“
-  Lyrics from ‘Give Me Your Eyes’ by Brandon Heath and Jason Ingram
