Daily Thought for Thursday, February 3rd

February 3, 2011

(Today’s thought is not meant to be so much provocative as it is thought provoking.
So read on with an open mind and an open heart to allow God to do His work in you regardless of the source from which it comes.)

Rock and Roll and Religion (Part Trois)

Today’s Thought:

“To teach is to touch a life forever.”  -  Anonymous

Today’s Question

Is it really true that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, or is that just a myth?

Today’s Spiritual Thought:

Pink Floyd had an album entitled ‘The Wall’ on which was a track with the following lyrics:
We don’t need no education, we don’t need no thought control,
Dark sarcasm in the classroom…
Teacher – leave those kids alone

Sadly it seems modern culture, our educational systems and many of our churches and families have embraced this unfortunate directive.

It was not by happenstance that Jesus was referred to as the Great Teacher.

Without instruction, education and teaching, we would be destined to repeat past failures and most certainly would not make future advancements.

John Adams stated, “Education makes a greater difference between man and man than nature has made between man and brute.”

While Pink Floyd’s message had some merit on a political level, I fear we, to often, have applied this same concept to our ethical, moral and spiritual educations as well.

If no one teaches us right from wrong, how will we ever develop morals? If we are left to our own devices, mankind is more prone to sin.

How will children learn to become responsible respectable adults if no one is willing to instruct them?

How will the world know that Jesus loves them and died to save them if no one ever tells them?

How will new Christians increase in wisdom and the word and learn to grow in faith if they do not have examples and teachers to teach them.

It is the responsibility of those who come before to teach those who follow behind and our cry should not be, “We don’t need no education,” but rather we should pray to grow in wisdom, grace and understanding.

Today’s Verses:

To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;  To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.  A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
Proverbs 1:2-5

Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
                     Proverbs 9:9

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth
        2 Timothy 2:15

Today’s Prayer:

Father, teach me and help me to be a good pupil.
