Movie Ministry (Part Two)

(This like the Rock and Roll Series is not intended to offend but rather to use a little different tactic to provoke us towards greater strides in our spiritual life.)

Finding a Spiritual Message in “The Little Shop of Horrors”

Today’s Thought:

“There is s charm about the forbidden that makes it unspeakably desirable.” – Mark Twain from “The Notebook”

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: - The Bible (Romans 5:12)

Today’s Question

Did you know his about Moses: “By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season?”  (Hebrews 11:24-25)

Today’s Spiritual Thought:

Frank Oz directed “Little Shop of Horror’s” in 1986.  This movie depicts Seymour Krellborn, a freaky little geek, who works in Mushnick’s Flower Shop and who is in love with a girl way beyond him.  Her name is Audrey.  For our purposes though we want to focus on Audrey II, a Venus Fly-trap taken in and cared for by Seymour.  When Seymour first gets Audrey, the plant, he nurtures the little plant and soon it becomes a monstrous demanding beast whose best line is, “Feed me Seymour!  Feed me all night long.”

There is a lot more gong on in this movie than we will focus on here today, but for our purposes we need to view Audrey, the little plant that grows into a ravenous menace as being a metaphorical representation of sin.

It may be cute and even enjoyable for a season but eventually it will consume us if we continue to feed its insatiable appetite.

Sin can be like that.  It can seem little, even desirable at first, but soon it overtakes everything, reeking chaos and havoc in our lives and in the lives of those around us.

Sin started by one woman listening to a serpent and then one man listening to that woman; and look where its gotten us today.

For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.  Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.  (Romans 5:19-21)

Sin can be defeated.  We must confess our sins.  Even Christians sin, but we have an advocate and God has said if we will confess our sins, He will forgive us.

We need to humble ourselves, repent and realize we are still sinners prone to sin; but if we have accepted God’s gift of salvation and allowed our lives to be covered by the blood of Jesus, we are sinners saved by grace, who need to be diligent, obedient and mindful, that sometimes repentance is still necessary.

Today’s Verses:

Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.  Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man. I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you. Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation. For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears. Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus; And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more. For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season. Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
2 Corinthians 7:1-10

Today’s Prayer:

Father, forgive me my trespasses, debts sins, as I forgive those who have sinned or trespassed against me.
