Dependency – A Life Skill
I have often heard it said, ‘The more things change - the more they stay the same.’  And this had never made very much sense to me, at least not from a practical perspective.  Yet when you look at things from God’s perspective this idiom holds some truth.  God’s word tells us that there is nothing new under the sun – yet humanity is always in a state of change, transition, growth, development and possibly even deterioration.  So what does this mean to us – simply this even though things appear to be constantly changing – nothing is really new – for humankind is still lost without a savior and we are perpetually in need of grace, mercy, forgiveness and God’s power and presence in our lives.
The reality is this – we are all dependent creatures and our dependence is ultimately on God whether we are willing to admit or acknowledge it or not.  For with out Him we are nothing and in Him we have life and that more abundantly.
All creatures are united to God alone in an immediate union. They depend essentially and directly upon Him. Being all alike equally impotent, they cannot be in reciprocal dependence upon one another.
Nicolas Malebranche
Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.  For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 1:8-13
We spend most of our life trying to attain independence; but when it comes to matters of a spiritual nature and the things of God – dependency is the only way to go.
Today’s Prayer
Father, you’re bigger, better, greater and more dependable than any one or any thing I know.  May I always be willing to acknowledge, admit and surrender to my dependence on and in you.
“My life is in You Lord
My strength is in You Lord
My hope is in You Lord
In You, it’s in You
I’ll praise You with all of my life
I’ll praise You with all of my strength
With all of my life, with all of my strength
All my hope is in You
-  Lyrics from ‘My Life Is In You Lord’ by Daniel Gardner
