The ‘U’ in Unity
“We must all hang together, or we shall all hang separately.”
- Benjamin Franklin
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.
Psalm 133:1
We know from scriptures in the Gospel of Luke that a house that is divided against its self will ultimately fall. This is true of God’s house too.
When God’s people spend so much of their time fussing and arguing over insignificant issues that are of little relevance and that do nothing to further the kingdom of God; they weaken the effectiveness of their testimonies and decrease the amount of time and energy that is actually spent doing the work of the ministry they are there to do.
Unity is essential to the body of Christ if we are to be as strong as we can be and as successful as we have the potential for, we have to be of one mind, and one spirit for one cause and that is to lift up the banner, name and message of Jesus Christ.
It takes more than one person to create a unified force, but sadly often one person can diminish greatly the unity within a group.
If we could but learn to work as diligently and earnestly at becoming unified as we do at being diversified in our efforts, it might be amazing what we could achieve.
There is nothing wrong with diversity of ministry and programs to affectively minister to the needs; but even in that diversity there needs to be unity of mind and spirit.
Sadly it seems that not only is the body of Christ divided by denominational boundaries; but it is also divided by cliques and factions within so many of the individual bodies and churches that comprise even the single denominations.
I often wonder if God doesn’t often want to say to us, His Children, “Will you all just stop it and learn to get along.”
Today’s Prayer
Father, some days it seems the harder we work at making peace the more we seem to find ourselves at odds with our brothers and sisters, in the faith: sometimes so much so that we often become weary of trying and just give up and figure why bother. Help me not to give up and help me to strive towards unity of purpose, mind and spirit with my spiritual siblings.
“I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.
I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears me when I call “
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.
I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears me when I call “
- Lyrics from ‘He Knows My Name’ by Tommy Walker
