Food for Thought

“The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”

Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.
Proverbs 15:17

In light of today’s quote I have wondered if this is not why Jesus referred to himself as the bread of life and the spring of living water.

Maybe to get to our hearts He felt the need to appeal to our sense of appetite.

Transcending the physical realm and attempting to spiritualize this notion, shouldn’t we have a hearty and a healthy appetite for the things of God’s Kingdom?  Should not we want our spiritual bellies filled with the nutrients of His presence, His words and His power?   Shouldn’t we feast upon the savory truths of His promises and  the succulently satisfying guidance He offers to us.

Scripture challenges us to ‘Taste and see that the Lord is good,’

While some may contend that these references to food and nutrition are metaphorical: I tend to think there is also a bit of literalism to be found here too.

When Jesus declared himself to be the ‘Bread of Life’ He did not use like or as: and the same is true with His proclamation of being the ‘Living Water.’  When we eat and drink of this bread and water, He said we would be filled and would not hunger or thirst again.

So the next time you think about it, order up a super sized cup of living water and a colossal size piece of the bread of life: and maybe even ask for some Holy Spirit with that order, and eat of the good things of God’s banqueting table and see if it does not satisfy your hunger beyond what any natural food could do.

I hope this gives you a reason to stop and ponder this notion for a bit – after all it is just a little food for thought.
Today’s Prayer

Father: thank you for the sustenance of who you are and that when I have consumed my fill I am truly full; blessed and ready to face another day.

I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.
I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears me when I call
