Perception

“It isn’t so astonishing, the number of things that I can remember, as the number of things I can remember that aren’t so.”
-       Mark Twain

For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 1:12-13

I have often heard it said that perception is reality.  While a particular individuals perceptions might affect, influence and in many cases, constitute what becomes their reality: it does not always make what is perceived factual or real.

Often, perceptions can be influenced by prejudices, experiences and even lack of facts or information pertinent to a particular situation.

The truth is that perception does not a reality make: it can only be a fixed reality when it is ensconced in truth.

That is why, as Christians our realities need to be rooted and grounded in Christ Jesus and we need the Holy Spirit to guide our perceptions so that what we perceive to be, actually is.

The cry of our heart and the desire of our sprit should be to have God open our eyes to see His glory, His beauty: His presence and His power in all that transpires around us.

We need to have our perceptions influenced by His wisdom and His word, rather than our emotions and predispositions.

Can you imagine what a beautiful world we would see if we could but perceive the potential in each individual and each situation that God does?

Sadly to many times our perceptions are clouded, our realities are eschewed and our truth is lacking because we don’t allow ourselves to look with eyes of mercy and hearts of love.

Today’s Prayer

Father, may my realities revolve around you: may you be the truth I seek and may every one of my perceptions be guided, directed and influenced by your love and presence in me.

I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.
I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears me when I call
-  Lyrics from ‘He Knows My Name’ by Tommy Walker
