Thought for Thursday September 27th

Be Not of Many Minds

“Some people fall for everything and stand for nothing.”
-       Anonymous

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.  For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.  A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
James  1:6-8

John Ruskin wrote, “He thinks by infection, catching an opinion like a cold.”

Have you ever known a person who was like that?  I have.  I have met that fellow who had no real opinion or belief of his/her own: but rather whatever group or individual that person is affiliated or associated with: that persons beliefs and or opinions are adopted and accepted as theirs until they meet, someone else and then they adopt their opinions and beliefs: in a seeming perpetual quest to fit in or be accepted.

I have known others who are like chameleons: they adapt to the environment surrounding them to reflect whatever attitude, opinion or thought is the proverbial flavor of the moment.  Rather than take a stand or make a commitment to one belief versus another, or to adopt one opinion over another, these individuals are truly all things to all people so they might be accepted by or approved of by whomever they are with at that point in time.

As Christians we can not be this way and be pleasing to God.  Our yes, must be yes, our amen, amen and we have to stand firm, not wavering ready to give an account of what we believe in and what we are all about in Christ.

We have to know in whom we believe and we have to be willing to stand for that belief no matter what challenges come our way.

If we do not believe in something deeply enough and with enough passion to stand for it, be committed to it and be willing to make sacrifices on its behalf: do we really believe in the first place?

Jesus believed in us enough to die on our behalf – do we have the same depth of belief in Him?

Today’s Prayer

Father, help me to remain steadfast, stable and unwavering in my belief of who you are and what you mean to my life and may I be willing to act on those beliefs regardless of who I am with and what they may think of my commitment to you.

I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.
I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears me when I call
