Call It What It Is
“I never wonder to see men wicked, but I often wonder to see then mot ashamed.”
- Jonathan Swift
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil.
Isaiah 5:20
We would not call an elephant a house pet; nor would we call a military tank a child’s toy: yet we often have no qualms about calling a lie a little stretch of the truth; or lust just appreciating the beauty of God’s creations.
In short there are some things we perceive to be completely black and white, yet when it comes to sin we often tend to have a far less stringent perception.
There has been a great debate over the variable degrees of sin, vi-se-vi big sins versus little sins and all the varying sizes, portions and dimensions that might lie between the biggest and the smallest or the greatest and the least sin. But doesn’t all sin have at its core root disobedience to God? Hence all sin, regardless of the perception is fundamentally the same (sin equals disobedience).
The first bite of the fruit that Eve took in the Garden of Eden wasn’t the initial sin: it was simply a by-product of the sin: which was not listening thus disobeying God’s direct instructions. Adam’s sin was not listening to his wife; it was not listening to God: again constituting disobedience.
By-in-large, we do not like to use the word sin or disobedient: especially when referencing ourselves: and sadly in today’s culture it seems parents are often remiss in doing the same with their children: yet that does not change what sin is and that it is a direct result of both intended and unintended disobedience.
And remember scripture tells us if we say we have not sin – we are a liar and the truth is not in us. Is there anyone who would question that lying is wrong, it is against the very nature of God hence it is sin.
Are we not then very glad that we have a gracious and loving Heavenly Father who will forgive our sins and cleanse us of all our unrighteousness: if we are willing to admit responsibility and request forgiveness.
Today’s Prayer
Father, I know I sin both in word and deed so much more frequently than I sometimes like to admit: yet the truth remains the same, I am a sinner and I need your forgiveness: so please forgive me, quicken me and help me to strive to do better.
“I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.
I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears me when I call “
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.
I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears me when I call “
- Lyrics from ‘He Knows My Name’ by Tommy Walker
