A Healthy Approach to Sin

“If evil unchecked grows, evil tolerated poisons the whole system.”
-       Jawaharlal Nehru

Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:21

Contrary to popular myth, ‘An apple a day does not keep the devil away.”

The best advice that is given in scripture is to ‘Flee the appearance of evil.’

Yet, often some of us are not quick on the draw, so to speak, when it comes to the whole idea of fleeing, consequently we sometimes find ourselves surrounded by temptations and opportunities to engage in or succumb to those things which we ought not.

Sadly it often seems that the old adage. ‘If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em’ is the philosophical approach of many who call themselves Christians.  Rather than engaging our energies in becoming over comers and being more than a conqueror; we choose to be politically correct, or socially acceptable, or morally devoid of any stand or position that would offend or bring into questions someone else’s views, opinions or life decisions.

And while we know sin is pleasurable, especially for a season; until the fruit of it’s evils begin to ripen and the consequences of it’s influence begin to develop, it is often much harder to resist.  But once it’s effects begin to reek havoc in our lives then we want to run the other way or we become so transfixed by it’s allure that we are drawn in deeper and deeper thinking that we can eventually overtake it’s evil affects and we are truly deceived into thinking we can turn it into something good.

The best, and absolute healthiest approach to sin, both spiritually and naturally is to know what it is: recognize if for its potential causes and effects: and to avoid or overcome it with God’s help by His power and might.

And while it is unfortunately true that ‘Into every life a little sin will fall;’ when it does we need to be ready to acknowledge it, repent of it and then turn away from it and replace it with something that is good and of God.

Today’s Prayer

Father, I will never completely stop sinning until I see you face to face; but help me be more aware of the sins I do commit, more willing to relinquish than and better at finding more appropriate alternatives that are more pleasing to you.

I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands.

I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears me when I call
